Tell Me Lies
In Fleetwood Mac’s song entitled “Little Lies,” we hear the phrase, “tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies….”
As we know, there are different types of lies. Someone asks if you like their new haircut and you say yes, when, in fact, you don’t think it looks good. You don’t want to hurt feelings.
There are lies we tell to protect people. If a friend of yours runs to your house and says, “Hide me. Someone is chasing me and they want to hurt me.” You will lie to the one chasing and say you don’t know where your friend is.
There is the honest mistake. You tell something that you later find to be untrue. You then apologize and admit you were wrong.
And then there is the lie that is intended to deceive and to hurt others.
Now, it is not a newsflash that politicians tend to bend the truth, if you will. However, my concern is that Donald Trump, the leader of the free world, systematically tells lies that are deliberately intended to deceive and to hurt others. Almost every day, he sends a tweet or makes a statement that is, without doubt, false. From inauguration crowd size to false claims of Obama bugging Trump Tower…from false claims about a deep state to lies about our allies…it never stops.
I have given up wondering why he lies as much as he does. I must face the fact that our President is a pathological liar. But here’s where politics and faith clash. If you support Trump, how do you reconcile this dilemma? Or, is it a dilemma for you at all?
If you are not a Trump supporter, can you give me suggestions for coping? Some have said we need to avoid reading his tweets. But HE IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. What presidents say is supposed to matter.
My wonderful wife says that we are to pray for him and I do. But sometimes I wonder if it is fruitless to pray for one who has proclaimed that he has never needed to ask forgiveness from God.
What are your thoughts?
